Bengals diehard. Washed up college baseball player looking to get in tune with my creative side. Pete Rose belongs in the HOF, convince me otherwise. #SignedJT

Here at Crow Worthy, there is nothing we love more than a good bet. One of the biggest gambles in sports outside of who you draft is who you trade and who you trade for. A single trade can shift the entire culture of a franchise, so teams must be sure to choose wisely. Not only was Tuesday the Presidential election, but it also brought us the NFL trade deadline.

The weeks leading into the trade deadline usually yield a frenzy of moves heading into the second half of the season. This year, not so much. Just like that, the NFL trade deadline has come and gone for another year. If you were looking for blockbuster trades or season-defining moves, you’re out of luck. Many of the rumored moves in the league failed to materialize.

Trades were still made however, and although they might not have been the most groundbreaking moves, it will still be entertaining to see how these trades play out. Let’s have a look at the winners and losers from the NFL trade deadline.

Winner: Seattle Seahawks

We’ll start with Pete Carroll’s 6-2 Seahawks. Back in July, it was reported that Jamal Adams wanted out with the Jets. This was a perfect opportunity for the Jets to stock up on draft capital. A few contract negotiations later, Jamal Adams was headed for the Emerald City. The Jets received two first rounders (’21 and ’22) and a third round pick (’21). With the growing sense that the Jets are headed for Trevor or bust, they may have set themselves up as they try to find their footing as a franchise.

The Seahawks are the real winners here, though. Adding an elite safety to a defense with an already impressive résumé is a phenomenal move, considering the Seahawks are all in as Super Bowl contenders. They already have an MVP candidate in Russell Wilson, an elite offense featuring DK Metcalf & Tyler Lockett, and now have an improved defense in picking up Quinton Dunbar and Jamal Adams to pair with Bobby Wagner & company.

They did lack in one department; their pass rush. Enter Carlos Dunlap. Although he has just one sack this season, he has 13 pressures in seven games. He has had an undeniable impact on defense throughout his career. Dunlap was an integral piece of the Bengals defense for a decade, but the 2x Pro Bowler explained how “My time was clearly up (in Cincinnati).” The man literally put his house up for sale immediately after losing to the Browns, in yet another game they probably should have won. If that’s not the definition of sheer frustration, I’m not sure what is.

The Seahawks made out like bandits in this deal. Although he’s no Khalil Mack or Aaron Donald, he is a consistent option for the Seahawks to utilize on defense.

Winner: Tennessee Titans

25 yr old former All-Pro cornerback Desmond King is headed to the Titans. All they gave up was 2021 sixth round pick. King is definitely not a bad choice for the Titans and adds a little depth to the secondary. He will make his first start in Week 9 against the Bears. The Titans also released CB Johnathan Joseph, long snapper Beau Brinkley, and brought an end to Vic Beasley’s tumultuous short-lived tenure in Tennessee (recording just 3 tackles in seven games). The Desmond King move is proof the Titans are heading in a younger direction defensively. It will only benefit the Titans secondary to pair him with Kevin Byard and Amani Hooker.

Winner: New Orleans Saints

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Saints acquired LB Kwon Alexander from the 49ers in exchange for Kiko Alonso and a conditional fifth. This is a low-risk high-reward situation for the Saints. They managed to snag a Pro Bowl linebacker for practically peanuts. Even though Alexander has battled nagging injuries, he is still a solid middle linebacker.

Winner: Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions don’t win much, so we’ll let them have this one. The Lions acquired DE Everson Griffen in exchange for a conditional 6th round pick. The Lions have long been in a state of limbo and have largely underperformed in recent years. Detroit remains one of 12 franchises to have never won a Super Bowl and one of four franchises to have never appeared in the Super Bowl. Head Coach Matt Patricia and the front office are confident that signing Everson Griffen is a positive step forward towards at least making the playoffs. Griffen has racked up 20 tackles, 6 QB hits, 3 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks in 7 games. Hopefully, Griffen continues to bring this type of productivity to the Lions defense.

Winner: Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers picked up veteran LB Avery Williamson for practically nothing from the Jets. A 2022 fifth rounder and a 2022 seventh has very little value when picking up a guy like Williamson. He bolsters the defense and helps replace the void left by an injured Devin Bush. Williamson averaged 104 tackles the past four seasons and has 59 tackles in seven games this season. Williamson provides depth for the Steelers at the linebacker position behind Robert Spillane.

Loser: Green Bay Packers

One of the shocking storylines after the NFL trade deadline was the lack of activity from the Packers. Aaron Rodgers was not given any help at the wide receiver spot. There was speculation the Packers were interested in Texans WR Will Fuller, but in the end, the idea of bringing in Fuller was not only farfetched, but also detrimental to their cap space. The Packers are still going to be playoff contenders, but the lack of urgency left many scratching their heads. The Packers are old-school and prefer to rely on quality draft picks, instead of spending on big name players. This wasn’t anything out of character up at Lambeau.

Loser: New England Patriots

The Patriots lost out big time on this one in not pulling the trigger to trade CB Stephon Gilmore, who many regard as the best corner in the league. The Pats could have greatly benefitted from Gilmore’s talent in terms of dealing him in a trade. Gilmore is going to want an extension and should rightfully be granted one. It comes down to if the Patriots are willing to weather the storm with Gilmore as they try to rebuild. I also feel for Isaiah Ford in being traded from an exciting Dolphins team to a rebuilding Patriots franchise. When was the last time you could say the Dolphins were a better trade destination than the Patriots? 2020 certainly is a crazy year.

Losers: Ohio Teams

This is a trade I would have loved to see happen and one that could have helped both teams. Bengals WR John Ross recently requested a trade from the Bengals. With growing talent in Tyler Boyd and rookie Tee Higgins, Ross most will remain low on the totem pole.

In Cleveland, TE David Njoku also requested a trade. With the Browns’ acquisition of TE Austin Hooper in free agency, as well as the emergence of rookie TE Harrison Bryant, Njoku may not receive the targets he desires. After suffering a knee injury in the season opener, Njoku hasn’t produced as much as the Browns would like, yet they have stayed true to their belief in a three tight-end system. There hasn’t been too much production in the receiver department for the Browns either. With OBJ out for the remainder of the season, the Browns could desperately use some outside help for Mayfield.

See a need, fill a need. This is a perfect scenario for each team. They are filling a void in each other’s best interest and it’s not like they’re going to meet again this season anyway. Neither is winning the AFC North, and John Ross could add depth to a Browns WR corps that suffered a huge blow in OBJ tearing his ACL. David Njoku could add depth at TE for Joe Burrow, after losing C.J. Uzomah to a torn achilles.

Great trade if you ask me. Both have been greatly underutilized in their respective cities. Ross is one of the least targeted receivers on the Bengals and has missed significant time due to injury. When healthy though, he can be a reliable option with blazing speed. The Browns now have Austin Hooper and Bryant in the Dawg Pound, so why not pull the trigger? Oh yeah, the Bengals should have traded AJ Green to a contender for some draft picks too, but I digress.

Heading Into Week 10

The moves made by the Bucs in signing Fournette, Gronk, and AB have been obvious wins for them thus far, so I decided to keep them off of the list. The same can be said for Baltimore, who traded for DE Yannick Ngaoukue, a noteworthy addition to their already scary defense.

Here we are in the driver’s seat of Week 9. Halfway through an unprecedented season, teams are now locked & loaded in their ultimate quest for Super Bowl contention. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out, especially with the number of COVID cases rising amongst players. Despite very little activity this season, the NFL trade deadline is exciting nevertheless, so be sure to sit back, crack open a cold one, and enjoy some socially-distanced football.
