The Chiefs could do worse than Chad Henne

Play episode

Born and raised in Miami, Florida. I used to play baseball for a living; I walked a lot and didn't hit enough. Now I write words for a living and drop absolute bombs every Sunday for my men's league team.

The Sopranos is more groundbreaking than it is good.

The Chiefs aren’t in a terrible spot with Chad Henne under center *dodges tomato*. Yeah, I said it. After Patrick Mahomes was knocked out of the game with a concussion in today’s 22-17 win over the Browns, Chad Henne stepped in. The 35-year-old backup went 6 for 8 for 66 yards through the air, adding 12 on the ground. He threw one pick and accounted for no scores.

Not great, but certainly not an abomination.

Big plays when it mattered

Henne made the two biggest plays of the game for the Chiefs, and they happened consecutively. On 3rd and 14, Henne pulled it down and scrambled for 13 yards. Andy Reid, whose cojones must drag on the floor, then decided to go for it on fourth down near midfield with his team up by five and less than two minutes left in the game. Henne rolled to his right and hit Tyreek Hill for a five-yard gain, getting the first down and sealing the game.

That’s big time.

So while Chad Henne’s traditional QB rating might not have been too pretty (59.4), his QBR was a solid 57.2, mostly due to those two plays.

The right skillset

Chad Henne can do a lot of the things Patrick Mahomes can do. Seriously. Granted, he doesn’t do any of them nearly as well, but he has a big arm and can move around if he needs to, as he showed on that 13-yard scamper. He’s also a bit of a gunslinger, not unlike his MVP teammate. There’s a reason the Chiefs have held onto him.

Kansas City‘s offense is littered with weapons that can hide some of Henne’s deficiencies (accuracy, decision-making). While there is no replacing Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs aren’t in that bad of a spot with Henne, who knows the offense like the back of his hand and can still make plays. An unproven youngin would likely spell doom for the Chiefs as they host the Bill next week with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line. But Chad Henne can get it done if Mahomes doesn’t clear the concussion protocol.

P.S. I’m not being a homer. I’m a Dolphins fan. I don’t even like Chad Henne. He just fits the Chiefs offense.
