Paul Pierce said the Heat would miss the playoffs…LOL

Born and raised in Miami, Florida. I used to play baseball for a living; I walked a lot and didn't hit enough. Now I write words for a living and drop absolute bombs every Sunday for my men's league team.

The Sopranos is more groundbreaking than it is good.

There is nothing better for a team or player than for Paul Pierce to make a negative prediction about them. Nothing. Nothing in this world. A Paul Pierce prediction essentially guarantees that the opposite will come true. His basketball analysis has transcended mockery. It now begs the question of if he is simply trolling all of us by being bad on purpose, because when you predict the Eastern Conference Champion Miami Heat will not make the playoffs the following season, it’s valid for people to question if you’re serious or not.

The Heat have gone 11-5 and have rejuvenated their season since Pierce made this prediction on January 28th. Naturally. They’re currently the fifth seed in the East, at 17-17. Nice one, Paul.

Never a doubt (sort of)

I’m gonna be honest, there was a little bit of doubt in me as the Heat bottomed out in late-January. A little. A smidge. Even with Paul Pierce’s prediction. This team just had no life or answers, especially late in games. Injuries were piling up, something that seems to happen every year for the Heat. Guys looked worn down even though the season had just started, possibly a byproduct of the short offseason after the NBA bubble playoffs. No one played harder than the Heat in Orlando, and it looked like they were paying the piper.

But Coach Spo appears to have figured it out, at least for now. Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, two All-Star snubs, have been excellent on both sides of the floor. Kendrick Nunn has provided a desperately-needed offensive spark. Getting Goran Dragic back has provided yet another spark, which bodes well for the rest of the season if he can stay healthy (big if, though). Spoelstra likes to tinker with different lineups, but he’s found a rotation he can rely on.

This Heat core has been through slumps before, only to inevitably bounce back when guys get healthy and Spo unlocks the secret formula. Shame on me for doubting them, even a little.

Say something bad, Paul Pierce!

Even though the Heat have been red hot, I don’t think they will contend like they did last season. I expect them to be between a three and five-seed in the playoffs, and probably make it to the second round before getting bounced. That will change if they add a big-bodied, versatile rim protector, a glaring flaw of theirs. But if they stand pat, that’s where I think they’ll end up.

That is, unless Paul Pierce fires off another negative Miami Heat take.

C’mon, Paul! Say something bad! It’s our only hope of making it back to the Finals! You’re clearly going to be wrong about the Heat missing the playoffs and everyone will make fun of you like they always do, but what if you make another negative prediction about the Heat and it comes true?! Then your credibility will be restored! Pop one off, Paul. I know you want to. Give me a “The Heat will get swept in the first round,” soundbite. It’s right on the tip of your tongue.

One or two of those and the Heat will be hoisting the Larry O’Brien trophy this season. That’s the real “truth.”
