I know Boston is a heavy pro sports town, but if you’re not following the BC Baseball team, you’re missing out. They have a real chance to go to Omaha for the College World Series. And it’s exciting baseball too! Just look at what happened last weekend for the Eagles down at Auburn!
Incredible Comeback
Sal Frelick led off the 9th inning facing a 9-1 deficit with a single. Harmless leadoff base hit, right? No way Auburn, a perennial powerhouse, would give up 8 runs with two outs on their home turf, right? Wrong! After batting around and scoring 5 runs, Frelick was at bat for a 9-6 deficit in the top of the 9th. And what did the Golden Spikes Award candidate do? He tied the game with one swing! Onto extra innings they go where Luke Gold hits a 2-run homerun to win in the top of the 10th. Epic comeback.
After their scheduled weekend series vs Wake Forest got cancelled due to COVID issues within the Demon Deacons program, BC Baseball and Auburn quickly came together to create an intriguing ACC/SEC weekend series. BC goes down to Auburn and takes 2 of 3 from SEC and national power Auburn. They were rewarded too. After taking 2 of 3 from Duke the weekend before, BC is now ranked #13 by Baseball America and #17 by D1Baseball.com. The #13 ranking is the highest ranking in program history.
Talent and Style
Talent starts with the aforementioned Sal Frelick, the Lexington, Massachusetts product, but certainly doesn’t end there. Infielder Cody Morisette and RHP Mason Pelio join him as potential first rounders in the upcoming MLB Draft. Morisette, from Manchester, NH, is a two time All-American and Pelio played on USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team while also garnering All-American status.
The Eagles play a fun, gritty, New England brand of baseball. Aggressive offense and tough defense. The Eagles get on base and manufacture runs anyway they can. It’s been by the long ball recently, with 5 home runs, 2 bombs from Morisette, vs U Maine on Tuesday. The Eagles have scored 88 runs in 11 games leading to a 9-2 record. Sal Frelick is 4th in the nation with 22 and won ACC Player of the Week for his play down at Auburn, hitting .571 with a 2.004 OPS with three home runs.
Time to Buy In
In my top Massachusetts events blog a couple weeks back, I put BC Baseball at #9. They have a new stadium at Harrington’s Village which has capacity for tons of fans. Students can sit on the hill in left field while I’ll have a balcony view on the deck at the new Peter Frates Center; a state of the art practice facility for both the baseball and softball programs named after my brother.
The Birds travel to Louisville, Kentucky for a top 15 matchup against the Cardinals, who are ranked #10. Then, their first ACC series at home will be against UNC on March 19 – 21. They will host Clemson the following weekend, starting on March 26th. See you there!
