They’ve been going on for a long time. Endless rumors about teams inquiring on the trade status of Cubs star 3B Kris Bryant. This off-season was no different as rumors swirled of trade talks between the Mets and Cubs. However, reports recently surfaced the talks have hit the end, and Cubs new President of Baseball Operations has stated the 3B will not be traded. For what has seemed like forever, it’s about time the Kris Bryant trade rumors are coming to an end.
Bryant’s Time with Chicago
29-year-old Kris Bryant has been with the Cubs organization since he was drafted 2nd overall in the 2013 draft. He started off his career with high expectations and he delivered. In his debut season, Bryant hit .275 with 26 homers and 99 RBIs.
The following season, Kris put it together, going on to win NL MVP and a World Series ring. In his MVP season, Bryant blasted 39 homers, driving in a career-high 102 baserunners while hitting a solid .292.
The following seasons were still very, very good. In 2017, Bryant hit 29 homers and had 73 RBIs. He hit for a high average once again (.295). 2018 was an injury-filled season, but Kris managed to play in 102 games. In 2019, Bryant came back strong, playing in 147 games with 30+ homers once again. In the pandemic-shortened season in 2020, Bryant only appeared in 34 games, hitting a lowly .206. However, that season is now behind him, and the career .280 hitter looks to get back into form.
Bryant’s Role with the Cubs
Kris has been a big presence in the middle of the Cubs batting order since coming up from the minors. Bryant and Anthony Rizzo have been the bash bros for the Cubs. Kris is a great teammate, great player, and great person. He was a key player during the Cubs postseason run in 2016. He recorded three homers (most in his postseason career) and eight RBIs (also a postseason high). Moreover, he threw the final out to 1B Anthony Rizzo which gave the Cubs a World Series victory. Kris has came up clutch multiple times for Chicago. Especially with the new direction Chicago is heading, Bryant will be a valuable veteran.
Why the Rumors Started
All the trade buzz was generated because of Bryant’s contract, which will end after this season. Moreover, the Cubs will be faced with many tough decisions on who to sign long-term. Willson Contreras and Javier Baez are among those who will demand more money in their next contracts. Bryant was mentioned as the odd man out in most trade rumors.
My Final Take
Kris Bryant should not be traded. His value to this organization and play on the field are vital to the Cubs success. Moreover, the NL Central is up for grabs. A big (and healthy) season from Bryant will be key for the Cubbies to make another postseason push.
